I moved up first in a half crouch, weapon low-ready. There was some cover leading up to the house, but once we reached the fence, we’d have to brave a stretch of open field.

We went round the back, keeping clear of the line of fire from the sniper’s nest, even though it was unoccupied.

You never know.

Around the back of the house, all the windows were boarded up, but the boards were placed far enough apart that a shooter could acquire targets through them and fire his weapon.

Once we reached a shed—the last cover until we hit the lawn—I instructed Bailey and Sasha to cover me on three.

I counted down and dashed out from behind the cover, moving in a zig-zag pattern until I hit the picket fence. I crouched behind it and beckoned the others without looking.

The barbed wire was strong and well-placed, but I had a blade that cut through anything. I placed the rifle beside me, swept inward with my spirit sense, and channeled Qi to my right arm. My Scythe Arm technique manifested—a wicked blade of the strange but powerful material covered in a pattern of hexagons.

Holding the barbed wire with my other hand, I cut through it with ease, removing a length of the material, and I discarded it.

A few moments later, Sasha hit the ground beside me.

“You run for the house,” I said to Sasha, dismissing my Scythe Arm technique and picking up the rifle. “I’ll cover you. On three.”

I popped over the fence and trained the house with my rifle. “One, two, three.”

Sasha got up, climbed over the picket fence, and dashed toward the house. She moved fast, zig-zagging as instructed, but it was clear she was close to pissing herself. When she stood with her back to the wall, panting, I gestured for Bailey to follow. She hopped over the fence with ease, jumping higher and easier than most people could.

When she reached Sasha, I followed suit, enforcing my legs and knees with a burst of Native Qi. Such basic techniques required only a negligible amount of Qi after our intensive training. I cleared the barbed wire with a single hop and hit the ground running.

A moment later, I slammed back-first against the wood paneling of the home, right beside a window.

I nodded at Bailey and Sasha. “On me.”

We moved along the wall, rounded one corner, another, and then took the front of the house.

The corpse swayed in the gentle breeze, and the rope creaked under the weight. Our John Doe was a man in his forties, bald, with the muscular build of someone who has stayed fit all his life.

He doesn’t look like someone who would despair.

“Secure the entrance,” I said to Bailey and Sasha. “I’m checking the corpse.”

The girls covered each other as they moved in turns. I followed.

Closer to the corpse, the stink hit me, but the guy wasn’t gone for more than a few days. I rifled through his pockets, found the keys to the house, a pack of chewing gum, but nothing else.
